Museums at Clermont-Ferrand …

Intended to satisfy all tastes and all ages, the city’s museums have a lot of surprises in store. Would you rather see dragonflies, works of art, Gaul coins or the Michelin Man?

Two museums were generously donated by two citizens of Clermont-Ferrand, and are named after them: Henri Lecoq and Jean-Baptiste Bargoin.

In the Henri-Lecoq Natural History Museum, where Lecoq once lived, we can find collections of mineralogy, zoology, palaeontology and geology.

In the Bargoin Museum there are two departments:

– the archaeological department with collections of items found in the region dating back to prehistory, protohistory and the Gallo-Roman era: the plaques from the Sources des Roches are unique in Europe.

– As well as in the Carpet and Textile Art department which has permanent and temporary displays of high-quality items.

Bordering the ramparts of the precinct of the historic quarter of Montferrand, the museum is set up in the former Ursuline convent. The luminous architectural and museum redesign, carried out in the 1990s by Adrien Fainsilber and Claude Gaillard, transcend this classic 17th century building.

Painting, sculpture, and decorative and graphic arts are displayed, ranging from pieces from the medieval era to the contemporary period.
