Visits on your own in Clermont-ferrand …

A large tourist information panel in Place de la Victoire, close to the cathedral, marks the starting point for the first three walks. Another panel located on the esplanade to the Roger-Quilliot Art Museum in Montferrand is the start of the fourth walk.
Beneath your feet you will find an unusual means of indicating the right path, with a series of medallions set into the surface of roads and pavements, bearing the image of four famous people in the city’s history: Vercingétorix, Pope Urban II, Blaise Pascal for the three routes around the cathedral, and Countess G for the walk around Montferrand old city centre.

THE PORT TOUR

The Port tour… a stroll through the antique dealer neighbourhood, with its antique bookshops and art galleries.

A prestigious tour by way of the rich heritage it offers: the gothic Cathedral, private mansions, sculpted fountains, masterpieces of Romanesque art of which Notre-Dame-du-Port, listed on the Unesco World Heritage, is the most remarkable example.

THE SAINT-GENES TOUR

The Saint-Genès tour… this is the most eclectic tour. Starting with narrow medieval streets, it will lead you to the 18th– and 19th-century boulevards; from the Bargoin Museum and the Henri-Lecoq Museum, it will take you to the Lecoq Garden. From the former School of Fine Arts, to the Hotel du Département and to the former Hotel-Dieu, the tour will guide you across the university district.

THE SAINT-PIERRE TOUR

The Saint-Pierre tour… you will experience both a medieval and a contemporary ambience as you take this contrasted tour.
It happens within the city’s commercial core, in the hustle-bustle of the market, the shops and terraces, at the crossroads of pedestrian streets leading to the town squares: Place de Jaude, Place Saint-Pierre, Place Gaillard, where yesteryear’s heritage stands side by side with the latest architectural achievements.

The walk through the ancient city centre starts in the esplanade of the Fine Arts Museum where you will find an information panel.

This leisurely stroll will reveal the major stages in the evolution of Montferrand and the sites of the high points in its history, from the original heart of the city at Place Marcel Sembat via the historical crossroads of the “Taules” to the panorama at Place de la Rodade overlooking the workers’ housing estates and the Michelin factories.

Beneath your feet you will find an unusual means of indicating the right path to be followed. This is a series of medallions set into the surface of roads and pavements, bearing the image of Countess G, the so-called Brayère Countess who was at the origin of the creation of the “new” city of Montferrand in the late 12th century. Banners bearing the city coat of arms fly from the front of buildings along the way.

Yellow coloured sign posts mark the route. They describe the sites, the buildings and the historic moments in the life of the city. You will see medieval, gothic and Renaissance architectural masterpieces, not forgetting the more modest dwellings of vintners and labourers.
